OUR ROOF CLEANING APPROACHES

The two main ways that we clean roofs are either through scraping and soft washing in Glenrothes, or through steam cleaning roofs in Glenrothes. The reason for this is that some roofs that are in very poor tile condition are far safer to be scraped, and this is something we will assess at the very beginning. Steam cleaning followed by soft washing is most commonly used and will provide a slightly deeper clean than scraping and then soft washing; but from ground level both will look identical.

Roof scraping is carried out using ladders and often scaffolding preferably, from the gutter line and by a team of two operatives. The staff have telescopic poles with a selection of profiled tile shape attachments that link onto the end of the poles, and use these to pull the moss downwards from the roof. Downpipes are intentionally temporarily blocked up at the top during this process so that they do not become blocked further down and ground sheets catch all the moss, before it is then bagged up and removed. The soft washing mentioned is a modern word for basically using chemicals to gently treat hard surfaces, and specifically to roofs biocide and less frequently sodium hypochlorite are used. Biocide is a biological agent that is sprayed onto the roof at the end of the scraping process and the in tension of this is to kill any left over lichen on the roof. This can be classified as a slow acting and long lasting approach that takes weeks to take full affect but that will over very long term inhibition of further regrowth-a preventative coating. We team up a pressure washer with a mazzoni firebox to create a system that produces low pressure water at up to 150 degrees, offering a very effective method of sterilising hard surfaces and removing more stubborn forms of biological build up on your roof than cold water. This method relies on a mini surface cleaner or dual turbo nozzle, attached to a pole and carried out from the edge of the home-whereby no one stands on the roof itself. On completion, the above soft washing approach is used to remove any remaining growth.

HOW DO PROFESSIONALS REMOVE MOSS FROM ROOFS?

In times gone by professionals would pressure wash roofs , but the modern methods rely on a combination approach of scraping and steam. The reason for this is that a pressure washer is often rated to over 2000 psi and this can agitate loose and broken tiles greatly.

CAN YOU PRESSURE WASH A ROOF?

It is possible to do so and done often, but why risk it when there are safer options available. If the roof membrane is intact and the tiles are in good order the downward pressure washing will not cause any issue as far as leaks go but will potentially strip part of the tile coating away; and if this method is used repeatedly then obviously the tiles will become more permeable.

WHAT KILLS MOSS FROM ROOFS PERMANENTLY?

Biocide kills moss permanently or a least for a very lengthy period of time, and is a type of microbial control that destroys all living organisms on your roof such as mold and algae. Biocide is also used for sanitising surfaces after pressure washing and such like, due to its ability to kill all bacteria.

Moss grows rapidly in the winter time due to wet conditions being perfect for plant life, so we always recommend that you have the roof cleaned in the spring or the summer, however if you find yourself with a roof full of moss in the winter then get in touch for a fife roof cleaning service as the post care biocide treatment will limit all regrowth anyway.

ROOF SAFETY

Our staff work in teams of two, and use scaffolding where viable for access. This means that they are working off a tower adjacent to your home an do not need to stand on the roof. Working at height has many risks involved and while there are cheaper companies that might walk on the roof fully unassisted by any safety gear, they are breaching health and safety standards and simply do not have the proper equipment for the job.

This product allows the roof to ‘breath’ outwards, and unlike cheaper products; this ensures that no mold build up happens on the homes internal structures. These coatings act as a sealer, making the roof more water tight from the outside, less prone to uv light fading and can make your homes roof look new again, at a fraction of the cost of a new roof. When you consider roof cleaning plus replacing a few broken tiles and a sealant coating versus the cost of a new roof, the price difference is staggering for the same effect.
